We’re proud to help businesses to manage waste sustainably, like St Austell Brewery who recently achieved Zero to Landfill status.
We first started working together in 2017 when the Brewery set out its mission to reduce its environmental footprint. Despite being one of Cornwall’s oldest businesses, with thousands of employees, partners and customers, we were inspired by the team’s commitment and ready to step in.
Diverting waste from landfill
Following a Waste Reduction Audit, we set out a plan to implement waste segregation and divert 100% of the business waste from going to landfill. We set up sustainable waste streams for plastic, cardboard, glass and organic waste that’s produced right across the business, from manufacturing sites right through to the ever-popular pubs. We also started to transfer waste into electricity using ‘waste to energy’ recovery plants.
A new three-year contract with St Austell Brewery
Now we’re thrilled to have signed a three-year contract to continue working with the business.
Piers Thompson, external relations director and head the St Austell Brewery Environmental Steering Group says: “We’re really proud to say that over 2,300 tonnes of our waste – from our head office, pubs and distribution centres – was diverted from landfill last year. In fact, this year to date, we’ve converted enough waste into energy to heat 147 average households for an entire year. It’s thanks to CWS, as well as our dedicated staff across the South West, that we’ve been able to achieve this.”
